What harm is a photograph? What harm a small bit of promo?

I don't watch tv, don't get 'pop' garden mags - my venue for finding new things is the internet, and folks like you. Shame the Radius Garden people for not doing the job they were at the show to do.

So much for them.Jennhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15597630887713954960noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14573299.post-68372450647161615992008-09-14T15:09:00.000-05:002008-09-14T15:09:00.000-05:00That looks like a blast! Heck, if they act right and understand it to be the publicity that it IS, you may even score some swag! Very fun! So, am I to presume that you didn't go see Kansas?lisahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18133943147518051559noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14573299.post-69851692155727214782008-08-24T13:33:00.000-05:002008-08-24T13:33:00.000-05:00Hi Shirley,When I was there I was wondering how ma...Hi Shirley,

When I was there I was wondering how many other garden bloggers that I read were there. Thanks for stopping by.

Garden girl,

Was your boss a vendor or just visiting? I wish I had time to look at more plants. My boss, an independent nursery owner was there, probably at the same time you were.

I really enjoyed reading your well-written account of the show. How cool to be able to go as Press. It's disappointing how ungracious some of the people you ran into were, and hard to make sense of it considering the straits many independents and garden industry growers and suppliers are in these days.garden girlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13284047851881823280noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14573299.post-35989721598451992862008-08-23T10:00:00.000-05:002008-08-23T10:00:00.000-05:00Hi Mr BrownThumb,I'm a fellow blogger/press attend...Hi Mr BrownThumb,
I'm a fellow blogger/press attendee of the IGC Show and am surprised to hear about the negative reactions you experienced. Too bad we didn't meet. There were other fellow garden writers and bloggers there too who I spoke to who had a positive experience.

I was video blogging and had the challenge of vendors actually asking me to come into their booths and cover their products! Guess I got the nice ones looking to promote their goods.

I would encourage you to attend the whole three days next time- the seminars were a great view into the industry. As far as independents versus big box stores go, I think the indies need this venue to promote the fact that they represent a different shopping experience. Kind of like McDonald's versus a nice sit down dining restaurant. Indies don't do drivethrough and I like that.

shirley BovshowAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14573299.post-17073552517156960882008-08-22T21:45:00.000-05:002008-08-22T21:45:00.000-05:00Hi Mr. Brown Thumb! I guess you never know how someone will react to you if you are the PRESS!!! I'm sorry you missed your Ups A Daisy people...that would have been a great visit with them! Well, you will be an experienced PRESS PERSON on your next visit...and can get it all worked in real well. 3 days there might be a bit tiresome though...be careful, who knows what they could possible to do to you in that amt. of time!!! :)
JulieJuliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04402220963886597754noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14573299.post-48382077622181294922008-08-22T14:28:00.000-05:002008-08-22T14:28:00.000-05:00OHM & Tracy,That's funny. It was pretty awesome as far as orchids go.

Nik,

The organizers and people working the event were really nice and helpful it was just a few vendors that I came across. I think if I had been able to visit all of them the ratio of good to bad would be different than what I expected.

Shady,

I did feel rushed I was late because we took my mom to a doctor's appointment. I had it all planned out and figured I'd have plenty of time but...

Perennial Garden Lover,

I'm jealous all I have near me are big box garden centers and all they sell are the usual suspects. I'd love to get my hands on a lot of the seeds they carry.

Tina,

It is funny you should mention that. I was at a garden center recently and they were falling over themselves allowing me to take some pics in their store. I'll have to remember to do a blog post on them.

Rosengeranium,

You make some good points. There probably is some fear in being copied or ripped off. BTW there were a couple of European vendors and I was surprised by how much nicer their products and booths were design wise compared to the American ones. The booths from the European vendors of vendors carrying European products looked more like stores or museums while most of the American booths looked "generic" for lack of a better term.

I really wish I'd had more time for the show. But whaddayah gonna do?MrBrownThumbhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11326733084344581944noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14573299.post-60771563233436128942008-08-22T13:55:00.000-05:002008-08-22T13:55:00.000-05:00Great post! When I've been on garden fairs the biggest fears behind not wanting to be photografed is piracy. Small firms and inventors are almost defensless against 'bigger fishes', despite copyright laws and patents (we've designers here in Sweden who has had their ideas stolen by Disney - try to win a battle against their lawyers...).

On Formex, a big design fair, the vendors were just picky. Why care for a blogger when those big newspapers etc. were strolling around the grounds? I sent thankyou emails to the vendors that were kind to me and hope that the words is spreading. Those who recieved the mails were actually grateful, because they hadn't thought about their image from that perspective.Rosengeraniumhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14240843576840257964noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14573299.post-65932207926088568672008-08-22T09:52:00.000-05:002008-08-22T09:52:00.000-05:00Hi there! I must say though that your experience with the orchid grower is not unusual. Many not knowing what blogging is about are suspicious and closed mouthed. I have run across this at nurseries I would want to talk about. Some are great, some not so. It does make one stop real quick when getting an attitude for no good reason. Frustrating too.tinahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17415302577518111227noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14573299.post-47926023566945281922008-08-21T22:49:00.000-05:002008-08-21T22:49:00.000-05:00What a great show. You would think they would be eager to brag about their company & their merchandise. How sad. I love Livingston Seed, I just purchased some Basil 'Opal' and 'Black Seeded Simpson' Loose Leaf Lettuce seeds from my local nursery. I've never seen the white variety of Thunbergia either. How pretty is that!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14573299.post-25469193637833773682008-08-21T11:02:00.000-05:002008-08-21T11:02:00.000-05:00Mr. Brown Thumb, What a nice job of reporting you ...Mr. Brown Thumb, What a nice job of reporting you did after such a brief amount of time there (considering the extensive number of displays!). Did you feel rushed?

It's hard to comprehend how some people have such a high regard for themselves; so as to be so "important" that they feel they can say or act in such disrespectful ways. Do they not realize they represent the company beyond the products themselves? Hmmmmm....

Anyway, it was fun to read everything you reported, and you provided the links. Now I'll need to take time to follow them. :-)

Thank you, again! (They just don't know how extensive your readership is!) ;-)
Have a great day.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14573299.post-60853821915199374362008-08-21T10:54:00.000-05:002008-08-21T10:54:00.000-05:00What a fantastic post, Mr BT! Are they not interested in presenting a friendly informative face?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14573299.post-38369163235477483242008-08-21T08:31:00.000-05:002008-08-21T08:31:00.000-05:00Great post, I would have loved to see this oh so s...Great post, I would have loved to see this oh so special orchid......must have been a sight....lol. I have seen celebrities not wanting to be photographed, but never an orchid :) I am definitely going to check out Garden Girl.
