Amaryllis Hippeastrum Seed Pods

In the last entry on Amaryllis pollination I promised an update on the developing seed pods of the Minerva I had started to propagate. I hope this photo of the Amaryllis/Hippeastrum seed pods will give you a good idea of what your seed pods should look like if your propagation attempts were successful.

Amaryllis Seed Pods

It's only a matter of time now before the seed pods ripen and begin to split and the seeds are available for sowing. After that it will be a couple of years before they finally flower and I'll see the results of my attempts to cross this Amaryllis with the NOID that I just had blooming.

When the seeds are ready I'll post a photo of them also so you can see what they look like and how they should be sowed to get them to germinate. As I type this I have yet another Amaryllis that has sent up a scape and will be flowering shortly. I'm pretty happy I waited much longer than everyone else to bring my Amaryllis bulbs out of dormancy because if I did it right I should have one or two bulbs in bloom during the first days of spring.

Here's a video I made showing you how to pot an Amaryllis Bulb.

and one showing you how to pollinate an Amaryllis flower.

  1. Wow, that's exciting! You oughta save the seeds of the next generation to see if they grow true to themselves or take on the characteristics of something else?

  2. Hey DS,

Yeah I'll be saving some and keeping them to see what they end up looking like in future generations. I'm hoping the characteristics I'm after are stable and keep from plant to plant.

    Keeping my fingers crossed.

  3. April 16--my amaryllis' currently look just like yours in the picture. How long before the seeds are ready? And you said they will "split", what will that look like? Should I still keep the plant in a sunny spot? Thanks!

  4. Dee,

Sorry for the late reply. You'll know it has split when it happens, it will be unmistakable. The pods opens at the seems. Keep it in the same sunny spot.
