Craigslist Finally Listens To It's Fans!

I'm a big fan of Craigslist and use it for a variety of things, from buying/selling to just as a place to go and shoot the breeze in the various forums. For about a year many of people have been campaigning for an area on Craigslist where people could buy/sell garden specific items. And we asked so many times but never really heard anything. I believe the last thing I'd heard was that Jim Buckmaster (president & CEO) thought it would be a good idea but that Craig Newmark (founder) didn't think enough people would actually use a section that is specifically for gardening.

But the great thing about Craigslist is that they listen to what the users want and try to be very accommodating wherever they can be. So I shouldn't have been so surprised when I saw on the homepage that there was now a Farm+Garden area along with a Materials section under the "for sale" area. Now if you're looking to buy or sell those kinds of items you can put up one free ad on Craigslist under the category that it applies. I'm going to use the Farm+Garden area to swap extra seeds or plants with people, because the idea behind Craigslist is that you deal locally with real people and in cash for your transactions.

Big thanks to Craig and Jim and the staff there.

If you're not familiar with Craigslist see the Craigslist Factsheet and learn more. If you follow the links above to Craigslist make sure to change your location to whatever city you live in. The links above go to the Chicago homepage because that's my default city but when you're there you can simply choose your city from the list on the right on the homepage. Enjoy!

  1. Thanks for the heads-up Mr Brown Thumb. Once people get used to listing their items under that heading we won't have to look through all the other categories for garden-type stuff.

  2. Hi Annie,

    Thanks for stopping by.

I agree that it will be easier to find gardening stuff but I also can already see the bad sides. It will be spammed to death by businesses and people who think CL is like a personal ebay store.

Sometimes I feel like e-mailing the people who post the same items day after day to give it up. If nobody has wanted to buy that "antique" plantstand in the past year I don't think you'll be selling it any time soon.

    Anyway it should be fun!

  3. Thanks for the great news mrbrownthumb. It is about time that had that category. I was so excited that I had to go check it out (and I had already been through the free, barter, wanted and general categories this morning) before posting this thanks to you!
